Acumum’s latest podcast with the International Lawyers’ Network
October 2023. Acumum – Legal & Advisory participated in a podcast, kindly hosted by the International Lawyers’ Network, sharing the experiences of Dr Geraldine Spiteri and Dr John Navarro in their different fields of expertise.
Recent market changes at different levels – regulatory, compliance, business appetite – have affected our business, in many ways that are mostly positive.
“The market is buoyant regardless of the triple whammy, in our case of Brexit, COVID, and the current situation in the Ukraine. The main clients that we’ve seen that there are quite a few opportunities with our clients operating in the renewable sector, FinTech, software, there’s still opportunities. It goes back, the limitations on that, relates to what we were discussing previously about increased regulation and compliance.” Dr John Navarro had this to say about the status of business, generally speaking, affecting all sectors of industry and asset management.
Dr Geraldine Spiteri, who heads up the marine and aviation service offering, commented: “From the yacht and aviation side, the biggest issue that’s going on in both markets is sustainability. Here in Europe, we’ve had protestors affecting the aviation shows. What they are not seeing probably is the development of sustainable aviation fuel, which is where you grow green products specifically to create this fuel. As well as the development of more and more technologies to make yachts environmentally sustainable.”
Acumum is active in many business sectors and provides, as far as possible, a one-stop shop through its active networks and its wide area of expertise. Dr Navarro says,
“As a firm collectively, we are also quite active in the energy space, both renewable as well as oil and gas. It’s a sector we practice in. It’s a very, very interesting area to assist clients in, especially when it comes to financing, restructuring, because it touches on a lot of different aspects.”.
Finally, being part of a large network of laywers and participating in a number of industry driven activities is essential. Asked about this, Dr Geraldine Spiteri says:
“Networking, networking, networking. When I was doing my international maritime law masters, Professor David Attard, who was one of my biggest mentors, had this mantra: networking, networking, networking. And in this course where people from about 36 different countries were doing international maritime law, I already believed in networking as a good source of knowledge and context. But this cemented it.”
